A popular and highly versatile gimmick, the thumb tip is considered to be one of the only magical apparatus that a magician would want to have on a deserted island because of usefulness. Gary Darwin is the person considered the person who has put the most thought into the Thumb Tip.

Early TT were made of metal and painted fleshtone. The Vernet company is well known for their hard plastic thumb tips molded to resemble actual digits. Many variations of false fingertips have appeared over the decades such as the sixth finger, finger tip, and Sanada Gimmick. Many of people have tried to create overly realistic TT over the years made of silicone or soft rubber. Most TT come in many sizes and colors. Some have been known to use bright green or shiny silver TT to prove how easy it is to keep hidden and use.
